Seismic Isolation and EPS Technology

Seismic isolators are advanced technological solutions designed to minimize the impact of seismic movements on structures. These systems are widely used in critical structures such as hospitals, bridges, airports, courthouses, public buildings, and industrial facilities to reduce the destructive effects of earthquakes.

Earthquake Protection Systems, Inc. (EPS), a U.S.-based company, is one of the leading global firms in seismic isolation technology. Founded in 1985 in California, a state frequently affected by major earthquakes due to the San Andreas Fault, EPS specializes in the development of high-performance seismic isolation solutions. The North Anatolian Fault, which shares similar characteristics with the San Andreas Fault, is Turkey’s most active and largest strike-slip fault. Both fault lines generate high-magnitude earthquakes and transfer energy over long distances. Due to these similarities, the seismic isolation technologies developed in California play a crucial role in mitigating seismic risks in Turkey.

EPS has pioneered the development of Friction Pendulum Bearings, which provide innovative solutions for large-scale projects. These isolators enhance structural safety by controlling horizontal movements of buildings and infrastructure during earthquakes.

EPS systems are represented and implemented in Turkey. The seismic isolation technology provided by EPS is utilized in various projects, with technical support provided in design, engineering, supply, and installation processes.

EPS isolators stand out due to their long lifespan and low maintenance requirements. Additionally, they are highly resistant to atmospheric and environmental conditions and offer advantages such as fire resistance. Globally, these systems are widely preferred to enhance structural safety and ensure uninterrupted functionality during earthquakes.

The similar seismic dynamics of the San Andreas and North Anatolian Faults reinforce the effectiveness of EPS solutions in improving earthquake resilience in Turkey. In high-risk seismic regions, isolation systems equipped with EPS technology serve as a crucial engineering solution to enhance structural safety. The implementation of this technology in Turkey aims to improve seismic resilience in local projects.
